The Tricked Out Toolbox

Whether you’re just sticking your toe into the murky waters of the publishing industry, traversing the white waters of your already established career, or somewhere in between, The Tricked Out Toolbox is for you.

In The Tricked Out Toolbox, you’ll identify your personality type: introvert or extrovert. Read anecdotes from authors about what’s worked for them and what hasn’t. Get ideas, craft a budget, build a marketing plan, and learn how to execute it.

With checklists and worksheets galore, real-life advice, and an easy to read format, this user-friendly, practical guide allows you to pick and chose what promotion and marketing tools will work for you. If you buy one business book this year, make it The Tricked Out Toolbox.

“In today’s tough market, savvy promotion is often a key ingredient to an author’s success, but few authors are familiar with all the tools available to them. They spend a fortune on the things that don’t work and overlook opportunities that might create more impact. That’s why I’m thrilled Melissa Bourbon and Tonya Kappes have taken on this aspect of the writer’s life and demystified the process. In Tricked Out Toolbox, the new author has all she needs to successfully promote her latest book. If you buy one business book this year, make it this one!” ~ Brenda Novak

International Bestselling author Tonya Kappes believes that targeted and smart promotion and marketing can take a book from lackluster sales to the world of bestseller. She pooled her resources and knowledge to write The Tricked Out Toolbox: Promotion and Marketing Tools Every Writer Needs. When not touting marketing and promotion through her workshops, she write cozy mysteries, romantic suspense, and women’s fiction. I’m addicted to coffee, McDonald’s Diet Coke, and Red Hots Candy!

The Rodeo Man’s Daughter

THE RODEO MAN’S DAUGHTER

by Barbara White Daille

His Rodeo Career Is Over…

When Caleb Cantrell left home as a dirt-poor teenager, he never thought he’d return as a wealthy rodeo star. As a matter of fact, he didn’t think he’d return at all. The accident changed all that. It ended his career, nearly ended his life and rekindled a bitterness he thought he’d left in the dust long ago.

But A New Life Begins

To rebuild, Caleb has to go back to where it all began—back to Flagman’s Folly, New Mexico, and back to his high-school sweetheart, Tess LaSalle. But a ten-year-old secret stands between them, one that could hurt everyone Tess loves, especially her daughter…their daughter…the one Caleb never knew existed. No rodeo ever required the courage Caleb needs now—to forgive, to forget and to start over again…if it’s not already too late.

THE RODEO MAN’S DAUGHTER, a February 2012 release, is available for order in print and e-book from:  Harlequin, Amazon, Barnes & Noble

Family traditions and the holiday season!

A Superstitious Christmas
I’m excited to have the cover and buy link for A Superstitious Christmas!!
Come back to Grandberry Falls in this novella and spend a little time getting to know Hazel Greenleeand her bunch!Maggie Greenlee can’t wait for the Greenlee traditions to start, especially the annual ornament exchange.
Only things don’t go as planned once Maggie announces to the Greenlee clan that she’s engaged to Grady Cohen, one of the wealthiest bachelors in New York City.
There are two problems. One, Hazel Greenlee, Maggie’s granny and Grandberry Falls’ local matchmaker, has already determined that Maggie is going to marry Mayor Mitch Dozier. And two, Grady thinks the superstitious beliefs that have ruled Maggie’s life, are child like.
With Grady deliberately breaking every superstitious tradition, and Granny Hazel pushing Maggie in the arms of Mitch Dozier, Maggie isn’t sure she’s going to survive Christmas in Grandberry Falls.

Why is this so special to me?
We have talked about superstition here before, click here, and it was so much fun that I even put a tab at the top of my blog page to list all the fun superstitions!
But this book is more than that to me, it’s about family and how different everyone in families are.
I grew up in a superstitious home, and no matter how different my family is, we still have that one bond between us.
One minute we could be fighting in the car and for a brief moment it would stop, only because drove over a railroad track and threw our feet up at the same time.
Family tradition is also a big element in A SUPERSTITIOUS CHRISTMAS. I hold tradition dear in my heart. Every year I put my mother’s Christmas tree up the Sunday after Thanksgiving because we’ve always done this. I take my mother to see a play or musical around Christmas because it’s tradition. There is just something about tradition that makes things cozy.
Plus A SUPERSTITIOUS CHRISTMAS, takes place during the holidays which always has your emotions on high alert.
This novella is packed with humor, dysfunction, romance, family tradition and SUPERSTITION!!
What about you? What is some of your family traditions?

Magical Stories

Magicla Stories E-book coverFantasy and fable. A new e-book by Annemarie Nikolaus.

A water ghost, a young magician, a magic-talented hare and a good witch: Magic and intelligence, reality and legend connect in these stories.
Two stories, which tell about the force of nature and the thoughtlessness of men.
One story, in which counts to consider well what to wish.
And a very particular Christmas story.
Some years ago, “The Brook“ and “Cork“ have been published in German, the Christmas story in Italian.
Short stories with humor and wisdom; and not only for children to enjoy.

This now is the English edition of my first e-book “Magische Geschichten”, published in January.  I thank two GIAM-members for their help correcting my English.

Like the other books its available at the Amazon kindle stores and in all formats at Smashwords.

Ambersley by Amy Atwell

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Traumatized by a blaze that killed her parents, young Johanna Vaughan remembers nothing of her privileged past. She remains ignorant of the complexities and dangers that surround her and gladly accepts a new identity when her guardians, an aging tenant couple, deem it necessary to disguise her as their adopted son.  Raised among the servants, she develops a sense of purpose that helps her survive the betrayal that unmasks her true identity. Forced to take her proper place in Regency society as the highly-sought heiress to the Ambersley fortune, she must defy the relatives who would make her a pawn in their struggle for power.

When her distant cousin Derek Vaughan inherits the dukedom, his dubious parentage makes it sacrilege to accept. But touched by the ravaged estate and its destitute servants, he confronts a society that shunned him while he rebuilds Ambersley and protects it from his stepmother’s bankrupting clutches. He intends to grant the title to his half-brother when the boy comes of age, but Derek’s plans go awry from the moment the gardener’s apprentice—once his trusted young friend—is revealed to be not only an heiress of beauty and spirit, but the one woman who may finally capture his heart.

Ambersley is now available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Do you like series?

I have to tell you that I love a good series set in a cozy town.

I grew up in one of those towns and it has haunted me for years. I really wanted to make a town of my own, with special people, and places. After I wrote a few novels, I decided it was time to write that series set in my fictitious town of Grandberry Falls.

The Ladybug Jinx is the first in the series, and is available now!! YIPEE!!! I can’t wait for everyone to take a stroll down the cobblestone streets of Grandberry Falls, and stop in The Fatted Pig for a great lunch. After lunch you can walk into The Figure 8 Boutique for the perfect outfit, or The Purple Cow Bookstore to roam the aisle for the perfect book that you and read at one of Trembling Cup Cafe’s outside table near the waterfall that the town is centered around.

Be sure to say hello to Mayor Mitch Dozier, who frequents the waterfall, talking about the looming eminent domain case against long time resident Hazel Greenlee. But if you see Hazel, don’t tell her you’re single or she’ll fix you up!

Come on over and pick up your copy of The Ladybug Jinx.

Blurb:

Celia Briggs has always lived her life for everyone but herself. With the death of Celia’s mom, Celia realizes life is too short not to follow her dreams. In her small town of Grandberry Falls, Kentucky-Celia decides to open up, The Ladybug Florist, which is only fitting due to her love of flowers and ladybugs.

How can she not love ladybugs? Her deceased grandfather always said ladybugs bring luck and love.

Marty Briggs, Celia’s father, never dreamed his life as Grandberry Falls, Kentucky’s only flower delivery boy is harder than the job he’s retired from.

Sam Barber jumps in his car leaving his Hollywood life behind. He didn’t know stopping in the cozy town of Grandberry Falls, was about to change his life forever. Especially after answering the help wanted ad at The Ladybug Florist and giving a fake name so no one would recognize him.

Celia knows something is up Sam’s sleeve. Why would a thirty-year old man want to deliver flowers? Marty doesn’t care, he’s just happy to be retired-again.

Will Celia ever figure out Sam’s true identity? Does Sam reveal the big family secret Celia’s parents have kept from her all her life?

Celia’s about to find out if ladybugs are lucky or a jinx?

No Such Thing now available

Today is release day for Book 4 in the Holiday Magic series. This is the mysterious Mrs. Wiggins’s story and if you buy it from Lyrical Press TODAY ONLY, you can get it at 30% off!

When magic fails, sometimes trust and a second chance are all you need.

Magical things are happening once again in the tiny town of Crystal Falls, Indiana. But this time, the source of that magic is in trouble. May (Malaya) Wiggins, the owner of a boarding house, has been called to task by a member of the Magical Enforcement League. It seems May’s been practicing magic and nurturing the special spark in others without a license.

Enter Tavian Brightmore—the good-looking, play-by-the-rules Magical Enforcement officer sent to drain May’s energy. He’s also her former lover and the man who betrayed her ten years ago.

As Mrs. Wiggin’s May Day celebration nears, she and Tavian must learn to interact with each other, regardless of the attraction and anger that sizzle between them—magical and otherwise—before the power-hungry dean of the Institute of Magical Instruction kills them both.

Excerpt from Chapter 1

The silhouette of a man appeared amidst a flash of golden light and a thin veil of green smoke. When the air cleared, he glanced about the porch then stepped in May’s direction. “It’s vital that I speak to Malaya Strothers.”

For the space of a heartbeat, May froze. “There is no one here by that name. I suggest you keep looking.”

She cocked her head and gave him a critical once-over. A tick taller than six feet tall, the top of his head almost brushed the roof of the old-fashioned porch. Short, sandy-blond hair fell into soft-cropped waves, a few silver strands sparkling in the afternoon sun. But it was his deep, whiskey-colored eyes that held her attention. She’d only seen eyes like that once before, ten years ago.

May sucked in her breath as recognition dawned. It couldn’t be him. Too much time had passed–and he didn’t know where she’d gone.

“Ma’am?” He scoffed. “I don’t have time to play games. Are you quite sure you’re not Malaya?” A muscle clenched in his chiseled jaw.

“I’m very sure.” As sure as she was that the man before her was indeed the same man she’d run from all those years ago. She narrowed her eyes and stiffened her spine. The inevitable had finally happened. “I haven’t been that woman for a long time, Tavian.” Although she won the small victory of surprise, she couldn’t revel in it when his eyes reflected nothing but cold animosity. “I’ve been May Wiggins since I left the Institute. I have no intention to return to the woman I used to be then.”

“I should have known. You always were a master of deception.” He shifted his weight and reached into a camel-hued briefcase near his feet, withdrawing an envelope. “This is your formal warning. You are under investigation by the Magical Enforcement League for teaching and practicing magic without a valid license.”

“Oh hell. This is exactly why I left.” May ripped the paper into little pieces and tossed them in his face. “Get off my property.” She crossed her arms under her breasts and glared. “If you wanted to dispute my license, you’re years too late. The list of crimes I’ve committed against the
Institute is long and tedious.” She didn’t know what bothered her more, the fact he had finally tracked her down or that the years had been kind to him. He was still as gorgeous now as he had been when she’d known him.

Tavian waved a well-manicured hand at the litter until the pieces became one. “We wouldn’t have minded the small indiscretions, except now enrollment at the Institute is down, largely because of you.”

“You’ll have to enlighten me.” For one long moment, she allowed her gaze to sweep over the black polo-style shirt that pulled taut over his broad chest and lingered over his lightly tanned skin. He hadn’t been that built the last time she’d seen him. She wondered what transpired in his life to drive him into a gym. “I’ve done nothing outside of the rules that would warrant a visit from you now.” A flash of sunlight off his monogrammed belt buckle drew her eye to his slim waist encased in well-fitting khakis.

No good would come from her persistent appraisal of his person. The opportunity for romance in her life had passed her by a long time ago.

“You’ve done everything possible to violate the rules, and now there’s a reporter out there who’s gotten wind of the supernatural goings-on in this town. He’ll come back to Crystal Falls, mark my words.”

“And why is someone’s curiosity being dumped on my doorstep? Isn’t that human nature?”
Crackers! Her attempt at goading him failed, but then it usually took more than one attempt.

His lips twitched but he didn’t display any anger. “Human nature can become a sticky thing. It only takes one person to believe his story, and then what? This town will cease to be the peaceful hideaway you crave.” Tavian moved a few steps toward her. “The first thing I want to know is why the name change?”

For the first time since he’d arrived, May allowed herself a small smile. “It would have been far too easy for the Enforcement League to find me without an assumed name. When I moved to
Crystal Falls, I bought this house. It had been abandoned for years, but I felt an affinity for it and
I took inspiration from the name on the mailbox.” She narrowed her eyes. He had just the hint of a thin mustache on his upper lip. It gave his serious face a playful air–much different from his somber business look of years ago.

“May Wiggins is hardly inspired. You are much more powerful than that simple moniker suggests.”

Unexpected pleasure swirled through her stomach at his praise, but she had learned not to put her trust in mere words–especially his. “Did you come here to waste the afternoon with pointless conversation or do you have an agenda?” She lifted a brow in challenge.

“Always blunt.” Tavian’s expression never changed. He circled around her and leaned a shoulder against the doorframe as if he had all the time in the world. “I can be just as direct. If you don’t stop encouraging magic to bloom in this town, the Institute has given me the authority to drain your powers, whether you give permission or not.”

Hope you’ll pick this short story up. You can find the previous shorts also at Lyrical Press, as well as Amazon and All Romance e-books.

Port Chatham Series

Pacific Northwest port towns have a fascinating history. For instance, did you know that the quaint and charming seaside village of Port Townsend, which today is filled with beautiful, refurbished Victorians and lush gardens, was once the second largest West Coast seaport? Or that its waterfront was infamous because thousands of sailors were shanghaiied? Or that virtually every other waterfront building was a brothel?

My Port Chatham mystery series juxtaposes these two perspectives of the quaint present-day seaside towns and their violent pasts. My heroine, Jordan Marsh, solves murders in both timeframes, usually aided by a meddling ghost or two who just happens to have been a suspect in the century-old crime. So if you have a hankering to read a bit about West Coast history, and if you enjoy humorous stories set in small towns, then you’ll love this series.

Tricked Out Toolbox

(April 4, 2011)

I never thought I’d write a non-fiction book when I started on this crazy career. If you know me, I tried to be everywhere even when I didn’t have a book to push. I full-heartedly believe that you can’t market yourself too soon. And it all starts with your brand.

This week, I was on a panel with Authors Jenn Stark and Misa Ramirez/Melissa Bourbon at Digicon at Savvy Author. Jenn is an expert on branding and all things related, and there were a ton of questions. I know Jenn and knew branding was so important for my career. That is the first part of promoting/marketing myself I did.

No matter how much I tried to cover up, my voice has become my brand. I about funny, quirky characters in quirkier situations. When I tried to write a love scene, it was like clowns juggling cats=A MESS!  So I went back to my voice. Again, and again, my writing had that comic voice and crazy situations. I couldn’t stop myself. This was how I knew my brand had to be funny.

“Quirky characters in quirkier situations.” Became part of my brand along with my tag-line, “Quirky creations from a high-class hillbilly.”

Yes! Hillbilly! Made you laugh-right! So when you pick up my books, you know you are going to laugh, cry, and feel good in the end.

Check out Tricked Out Toolbox, April 4, and get the down load on how to market/promote yourself throughout your entire career. We will help you figure out your PR personality and give you great tips to decide what is best for your career. Plus you get complete access to www.trickedouttoolbox.com and the spreadsheets (budgeting, schedules, decisions, etc.) you will need to make the best marketing decisions for you!

Cheers!

Something Spooky This Way Comes!

This week my editor asked if I wanted to take part in a Halloween anthology because another author had to drop out. The only problem~it was due in TWO days. I pushed the email aside for the night because I wasn’t sure if I was up for the challenge. I already have three books I am editing and sitting down to write a short Halloween story wasn’t really in what I’d planned.

Was this opportunity knocking and I’m not answering it? Of course I could find time to sit down and write ten pages–right? PRESSURE!

Well . . . I took the opportunity and did it! I sat down on Monday morning and wrote a ten page Halloween romance. I sent it to my editor and asked her what she thought. She sent me an email and said, “yes, we’ll take it.” I had to still edit it a bit, so I sent it to my critique partner and mystery writer, Heather Webber, who helped me iron out a few details and it was sent again.

There you have it!! My short story made it into the anothology that will be out on Sunday, October 24!! It goes to show that when opportunity knocks, TAKE IT!

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Carolina Heat by Christi Barth

Put a workaholic Yankee together with an amiable Southerner and watch the sparks fly! Annabelle travels to Charleston, where she stumbles across the trail of a long-buried Civil War mystery.   Along the way she finds steamy passion, steadfast friends, mortal danger, and the love of her life.

Well-known journalist Annabelle Carlyle is stunned by the personal twist of her latest assignment:  her best friend Vanessa is missing.  Annabelle goes undercover in the Old South to search for answers.  Full of thick accents and a way of life rooted in the past, Charleston is as foreign and strange a place as any Annabelle’s visited.  And before she finds a single clue, she runs into a sexy man she can’t shake.

Tall, dark and charming, Mark Dering is happy to show the gorgeous Yankee his hometown.  He’s captivated by the quick witted, quick tempered redhead.  But when they’re shot at, he realizes she’s far more than just another tourist.  Soon they’re knee deep in a mystery that goes all the way back to the Civil War.  For once Annabelle is in over her head.  Desperate to find Vanessa, she reluctantly accepts Mark’s help.  It isn’t long before romance blooms right alongside the magnolias.

The stakes grow higher when a body is discovered.  Someone is willing to kill to keep a century old Confederate secret hidden.  With her best friend missing and a killer on the loose, it’s the worst possible moment for Mark to try and unlock Annabelle’s heart. Or is love exactly what her life’s been missing?

Excerpt:

Annabelle pushed through the baggage claim doors and stopped dead as a dense wall of humid air immobilized her. No, it was more like being slowly smothered. The humidity was a wet blanket lying over the entire city of Charleston and it sapped the tiniest dreg of energy she had left.

Spotting a cab idling in the pick-up lane she hurried forward, wincing as her laptop case banged against her hip. A quick shrug brought the strap back onto her shoulder. It also threw her off balance enough to slip right off the edge of the curb. Her knees crumpled. Exhaustion dulled her reflexes, so she was on her way to the ground when a well-muscled arm sprinkled with curly black hair shot forward and grabbed her wrists, keeping her upright.

“Careful there. I guess it’s too late to tell you to watch your step?”

Annabelle stared at him for a moment without responding. The only thought in her brain was Wow! The man had to be several inches over six feet, and every speck of skin she could see was tanned. The way his muscles bulged under the plain white T-shirt told her his amazing physique didn’t come from weekly visits to a gym. And were those really dimples bracketing his smile?

“Uh, thanks,” she said belatedly. This behavior was ridiculous. She’d interviewed world leaders, celebrities, but was struck dumb by a complete stranger in an airport parking lot? Another part of her brain catalogued how well his deep black eyes were offset by his olive complexion and thick, black wavy hair.

“Are you okay?”

“What? Oh, yes, I’m fine. Apparently too tired to walk a straight line, but overall I’ll live.”

His dimples deepened. “Good to hear.”

“Thanks for catching me. The way my day’s gone, I would’ve fallen and broken my wrist.”

“Pleasure’s all mine. Now I can scratch `rescue damsel in distress’ off my to-do list.”

“Hmmm. When you look at it like that, it’s almost as if I did you a favor,” Annabelle teased.

“Then I should pay you back. Would you let me buy you a drink?”

This guy was smooth. And fast. On the other hand, this was the most fun she’d had in days.

He cocked his head to the side. “Come on, take a chance. I promise – no nefarious schemes. I’m gainfully employed, straight, single, and I think this could be fate. After all, it isn’t every day a gorgeous redhead falls right into my lap.”

“I appreciate the offer, but I don’t even know your name,” she stalled.

“I’m Mark.”

“Annabelle.”

“It’s a genuine pleasure to meet you, Miss Annabelle.”

His voice was flat out amazing. The vowels oozed like warm honey from between the consonants. This was her first encounter with such a thick Southern accent, and she was completely enthralled by his slow Charlestonian drawl.

She realized her hand was still clasped in his, and abruptly pulled free. Annabelle didn’t make a practice of standing in the middle of the street gaping at a man, even if he was unbelievably handsome in a brawny sort of way.  As an investigative reporter she was used to meeting people, quickly cataloging her first impressions, and moving on.  Being phased by a syrupy accent must be an oddity brought on by the extreme heat, she decided. This weather was enough to melt even her composure!

Act Like We’re In Love by Christi Barth

When two people make beautiful music together onstage, can their love survive once the curtain falls?  Linnea Larson is willing to do anything to keep her family’s Minneapolis dinner theatre from going under.  Anything, that is, besides accepting a date from the Hollywood hunk her father hired to inject a dose of star power into their production of Guys & Dolls.  It’s a toss up whether his greatest claim to fame is playing a superhero on screen, or a super stud off screen.  Neither fact convinces her he’s got what it takes to share her stage.  And thanks to a life long pact with her best friend, she never dates actors.

Luke Powell has fame, fortune, and an endless string of women, but also a lingering dissatisfaction with his picture perfect life.  Looking for a change, he escapes to his theatrical roots.  What he finds are wary cast mates, a nervous best friend convinced the show will ruin Luke’s career, and an adorable costar who stubbornly refuses to go out with him.  Suddenly singing and dancing aren’t the only challenges he’ll tackle over the summer.  Far from the spotlights of Hollywood, can he find happiness in the footlights of a tiny theatre?

Despite Luke dragging her into his daily paparazzi nightmare, Linnea can’t deny her mounting attraction to his irresistible charm.  And even if she’s crazy enough to chance getting involved, their fling would have a guaranteed expiration date.  He’s leaving at the end of the run, and she’s tied to her family’s theatre.  Why risk the inevitable heartbreak?  Their job is to act like they’re in love, but will they decide it’s worth the leap to fall in love for real?

Released October 7, 2010!  For more information, go to www.christibarth.com

Excerpt:

An hour later, Linnea’s world turned upside down. Tingles ran from the tips of her toes through her body and all but curled her stick straight hair. She and Luke had just finished singing their big love duet, “I’ve Never Been in Love Before.” Applause filled the room—and it took something along the lines of a miracle to get fellow cast members’ approval—but she barely heard it. Her entire focus pinpointed on the fact Luke’s voice was flat-out amazing.
She sank back into her seat and gripped the edges with her fingers to keep from throwing herself into his arms. The way their voices had melded was incredibly sensual. Every note Luke sang caressed her body with its velvety tone. The experience qualified as the closest she’d come to sex in many months. For that matter, it was better than the last time she’d had sex! God help her, with an attraction this strong the first time through, how on earth would she survive weeks of rehearsal without turning into a warm, gooey blob of exposed nerves?
“Great first act. I’m running to the vending machine. Want anything?” Ingrid offered.
“A cold shower.”
“Don’t think I have enough quarters for that.” Ingrid gave a quizzical look over her shoulder as she walked away.
